I AM 63 AND HAVE HAD PD FOR ABOUT 3 YRS. I TAKE 16MG DAILY OF REQUIP XL AND 1 MG OF AZILECT. MY SX ARE CONTROLLED FOR THE MOST PART BUT DEFINITELY GETTING WORSE OVER TIME,,MAINLY LEFT HAND TREMOR AND LEFT LEG AND FOOT WEAKNESS AND SPASMS. MY QUESTION IS ABOUT SINEMET. IS IT WISE TO HOLD OFF TAKING IT AS LONG AS POSSIBLE OR NOT.ALSO, DO YOU HAVE AN OPINION ON GENERIC REQUIP XL? I STARTED TAKING IT AND I’M NOT SURE IF IT’S WORKING WELL.THANKS,

If your symptoms interfere with daily activities and you are over 60 then you should be on Sinemet, the most effective medication for treatment of PD.
Individuals less than 60 are given the option to start symptom relief with dopamine agonists such as Requip or Mirapex. Reason for this is that levodopa induced dyskinesias are more likely to start when patients are intiated on levodopa (Sinemet) at an earlier age. The risk factors for levodopa induced dyskinesias are young age of onset of PD and high doses of levodopa given at frequent intervals.
